About Rita Katita...
For the past fourteen years Rita has crafted a collection of unique jewellery pieces using a large range of materials from silver to metal to acrylic to plastic, using a range of techniques from classic jewellery to straight integration of ready-made elements.
Rita's mixed-media style includes a wealth of influences from sources ranging from baroque to pop-art to constructivism and is hard to frame within a single style.
Trying to achieve what she calls a "poetry of the materials", Rita builds each piece as a set of tensions between the involved elements aiming at creating and resolving tensions that can create "living" pieces.
Rita works in Lisbon - Portugal, in the ancient city zone of Alfama, an area rich with cultural influences from the cultures which lived there across the ages: the moors up to the 12th century, jews since the 13th century and the miscellany of African and Asian cultures brought upon by the Portuguese discoveries of the 15th century.
Rita has studied Art and Design in high-school and then joined Art School AR.CO - Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual where she studied applied Jewellery. Her work has been featured in a number of fashion shows, in models from leading portuguese designers like Abundanza and José António Tenente. She has participated in several jewellery exhibitions, mainly in the Lisbon area.
Besides working in jewellery, she has worked in dance, cinema, theater and television productions in scenario design and as art director assistant. She has also worked as field-assistant to sculptor Júlia Correia.
